Summary

The market for residential doors is relatively mature, reliant on a combination of new housebuilding and home improvement activity and stimulated by the development of new materials and technical applications for doors.

The recession in the last part of the previous decade and the first part of this decade led to a significant decline in demand, which was largely reversed by a recovery in the housebuilding sector and greater confidence in the home improvement market with sales growth in the decade to 2019.

Beginning in March 2020 the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has had far-reaching effects on the UK economy and the entire home improvement industry including residential doors sales.

A period of lockdowns and Tier restrictions across the UK stymied industry and led to a large part of the working population being off work and receiving furlough payments as many businesses had to close. Many workers had to work from home.

The longer-term outlook is one where the market can expect a more positive stance and rising growth in residential door sales as the country resumes to a more normal period of economic growth.

During the national lockdowns, the market for domestic housing improvements expanded as homeowners invested in their own homes.

Demand for new building products and doors was only limited by the problems in obtaining supplies and delays attributed to restrictions placed on manufacturers trying to conform to government guidelines on safe working.

Suppliers emphasised their digital platforms in offering an extended Internet service to trade and to consumers as showrooms were temporarily closed.

New features included software to enable buyers to design and see their own door and to monitor cost changes in features. As the pandemic lessens it is likely this feature and greater web usability will continue as a feature on many door manufacturer and retailer sites.

The patio door sector particularly will continue to benefit from the current trend for maximising daylight in homes and creating brighter airy rooms leading to gardens.

Bi-folds will continue to become more prominent in the patio door sector as a popular choice by homeowners. In addition, bi-folds will be highly favoured in the home extension sector, adding extra value due to their higher price than traditional sliding patio or French doors.
