Summary

The door & window fittings market is closely linked to the door and window fabrication and installation market and the glazing industry in general - a mature market which has shown negligible growth in recent years, as consumer confidence and the construction economy wavered due to uncertainties about the impact of Brexit.

In line with general construction and economic trends, our estimate for 2019 is for positive, if slowing, growth.

Although the door and window fittings market is forecast to see moderate growth broadly in line with overall housing and construction markets, value growth for hardware through the specification of higher value products will continue to be largely offset by price pressures for lower value products and strong competition between suppliers.

The UK door and window fittings market has seen little merger and acquisition activity in the last two years, following a significant consolidation of suppliers in previous years, and the industry remains highly fragmented and competitive.

New product development tends to be influenced by a number of factors including fashion, (e.g. colours or styles), legislation (e.g. Building Regulations, the Equalities Act), and in response to technical issues.

Higher security standards play a significant role in product development and improvement. Partnerships between manufacturers and fabricators also stimulate the development of new products in response to changing requirements.

Polarisation remains a strong feature of this market which is characterised at one end by high value, high specification products and low cost, basic product ranges at the other.

Lower value sectors of the market continue to experience significant downward pressure on average prices due to increasing import penetration, and most retail and trade channels offer a wide range of lower value, own brand products.

Locks and handles represent the two major product sectors, together accounting for over half of the fittings market. Door closers now account for an estimated 15%, having shown stronger than average growth in recent years.

Whilst the UK retains a strong manufacturing base for door and window fittings (with consistent growth in exports in recent years), global supply chains are now an integral feature of the market.
